Latin Name : Coriandrum sativum
Coriander leaves are known as cilantro and the seeds of the cilantro plant are called coriander in the United States. It is also known as Chinese Parsley. In India, cilantro leaves and the seeds, both, are called coriander or dhania.
For understanding purposes, I will use the term cilantro, for the coriander leaves and coriander, for the coriander seeds.
Cilantro plant is native to Asia, Southern Europe and Middle East. It is a widely used herb. The leaves have a strong pungent smell with a strong flavor. Cilantro and coriander is much used in Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern, American and Spanish cooking. It improves the taste and flavor of food.

Uses Of Cilantro
A chutney made of cilantro and mint with onions and garlic is very popular in India. Also, split coriander seeds are roasted to make a great chewable mouth freshener.
It is used in pickles, chutneys, curries, marinates apart from being used in garnishing food. Always crush the coriander just before adding as the seeds lose their flavor quickly.
Cilantro should be added to food dishes after they are cooked as adding it to food while cooking destroys its nutritive constituents.
In India, since ancient times coriander has been used in food and in medicine.
Cilantro Leaves And Seeds Nutrition Facts
Cilantro contains many compounds which have anti oxidant properties. The flavor of coriander and cilantro is due to the fatty acids and volatile oils in it. Coriander is rich in dietary fiber providing as much as 42 gms fiber in 100 gms of coriander. This fiber helps in lowering the LDL cholesterol as it binds to the bile salts.
Coriander contains very good amounts of minerals like iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium and zinc. It also has high levels of vitamin C. Coriander is also a storehouse of the B complex vitamins, esp thiamine, niacin and riboflavin.
Coriander oil is extracted from the seeds and contains anti bacterial properties and is rich in phytonutrients, flavonoids and active phenolic compounds.

Coriander oil is a sweet and spicy, warm oil with almost colorless to pale yellow colored and of watery consistency. It is extracted from the seeds of the cilantro plant, by steam distillation.
Uses of corainder oil
It helps in reducing brain fag, tension, migraine and nervous weakness. Also relieves gas and stomachache, controls rheumatic and arthritic pains, muscle spasms, benefits in colds and flu. It removes toxins and wastes.
One can use it in hot water used for taking steam and the vapors of this oil or put it in bath water or massage it for pain relief.
It is also used in creams and lotions for benefit in such cases.

Coriander Sherbet Recipe
CORIANDER SHERBET
Sugar - 50 g
saffron - 0.1 gm
coriander seeds - 0.1 gm
cardamon - 0.1 gm
water - 120 ml
food ice - 50 gm
Infuse saffron, crushed coriander seeds and cardamon in hot water.
Add sugar.
Strain after cooling .
Add ice and serve.

In Pox
To remove body heat, soak coriander and caraway seeds in water. Strain the water in the morning.Add sugar to this water before drinking. It cools the body.
In Thyroid Problems
In over active or under active thyroid function, take 5 tsp coriander. Soak in 200 ml water and boil. Strain and drink when cool, half quantity in morning and the other half in the evening.
As A Breath Freshener
Chewing cilantro keeps the mouth and breath fresh. Chewing coriander after eating onions or garlic masks their smell.
For Blood In Stools
Grind 15 gms coriander. Add 12 gms candy sugar. mix and drink for relief.
In Loose motions After Having Food
If you have bowel movements after every meal take this. Add black salt to coriander and take 1 spoon of this after meals to get rid of this problem.
In Warts & Moles
Grind coriander and make a paste with water. Apply on them.
In Stomachache of children, Mucus and Indigestion
Boil a mixture of coriander and dry ginger in 200 ml of water. When 100 ml water remains remove from heat. Strain, cool and drink this for relief.
In Excessive Sneezing
Inhale the aroma of fresh coriander leaves for relief.
In Vomiting
Grind fresh cilantro, take out the juice. take 5 tsp of this juice a few times to stop vomiting. Even pregnant women can take this to get relief.
To Prevent Heat Stroke
Drink sugar mixed coriander water.
In Summer Diseases
Soak 5 tsp coriander in 2 glasses of water at night. In the morning add candy sugar to taste and drink. It relieves burning burning sensation during urination and stoppage of urine. It also relieves giddiness and nausea due to heat and also stops nose bleed due to hot weather.
For immediate relief of hot weather giddiness, vomiting and heart palpitations.
Crush 100 gms coriander. Soak in 500 ml water. Keep for 1 hour. Then take out half cup of this water, strain and add 5 Batasas, stir well till it mixes in the water. Drink this water every 3 hours for benefit.
In Throat Pain & Burning Sensation In The Throat
Chew 2 tsp coriander and suck the juice so formed, every 3 hours. It benefits in all types of throat pains. If you wish add candy sugar to this.
For Burning Sensation In The Body
Soak 4 tsp coriander in water at night.Heat this water in the morning. Strain and drink. Add candy sugar to this if you wish to.
For Burning Sensation In Hands & Feet
Grind coriander and candy sugar. Take equal quantities of both. Take 2 tsp of this mixture with cold water 4 times a day. This gives relief in burning micturition, heat in the body and stops bleeding in piles.
For Burning Sensation During Urination & blood In Urine
Soak 15 gms coriander in water at night.In the morning whisk this up in a mixer. Strain and mix candy sugar. This helps in normalising uncreased heart beat too.
In Stoppage Of Urine & Blood In Urine
To 500 ml of boiling water add 30 gms coarsely crushed coriander at night.In the morning mix this well and strain. Add 30 gms Batasas ( Batashas are Candied Sugar Drops. Video on making Batashas is given here.)to this. Drink this water 5 times a day in equal quantities.
In Asthma & Asthmatic Cough
Grind coriander and candy sugar. Drink this with rice water for benefit.
In Insomnia
A. Grind cilantro. Add water and sugar. Drink this for relieving insomnia and headaches.
B. Eat cilantro chutney for relief. ( Recipe given here)
For Excessive Bleeding In Menses
A. Add 20 gms coriander to 20 ml water and boil till 50 ml water remains. Strain and add candy sugar. Cool and drink.
B. Mix ground coriander, brown sugar and ghee. Eating this too helps in giving relief.
In Brain Weakness
Grind 125 gms coriander. Boil in 500 ml water till 125 ml water remains. Strain and add 125 gms candy sugar. Heat this again till it thickens. remove from heat. Lick 2 tsp of this everyday. It relieves darkness before eyes due to weakness due to brain weakness and colds too.
In Nosebleed
A. Inhaling vapours of cilantro juice and applying crushed cilantro on the head helps in stopping the bleeding.
B. Soak coriander in water at night. In the morning mix candy sugar in this and drink.
C. Soak 10 raisins, 2 tsp coriander and 2 tsp candy sugar in 200 ml water at night. Grind all these in the morning. Strain and drink.
In Gas
Put 2 tsp coriander in 200 ml water. Boil and strain. Make 3 parts of this and drink 3 times in a day.
In Baldness
Applying juice of cilantro on the bald spots helps in growth of new hair.
In Loss Of Appetite
Drink 30 ml cilantro juice everyday.
In Indigestion
Take 60 gms coriander, 25 gms black peppercorns and 25 gms salt.Grind these and take 1/2 tsp after every meal with water.
In Malaria
Take 1/2 tsp each of ground coriander and ground dried ginger with water. It relieves all fevers which come on with a chill.
In Stomachache
Drink coriander sherbet or take 2 tsp coriander heated in a cupful of water.
In Bleeding Piles
Boil 4 tsp coriander in 250 ml of milk. Strain and add candy sugar. Drink this for benefit.
In Improving Vision
Eating coriander alone or with amla improves vision.
In Mouth Ulcers
Fine churan of coriander mixed in borax or soda which is used for eating, if applied on the ulcers benefits. Applying cilantro juice or ground coriander too helps.
Boil whole coriander seeds in water and gargle with this water after cooling the water. This helps too.
In Loose Motions & Constipation
Fresh cilantro, black salt,black peppercorns to be ground together and made into a chutney. Eat this chutney for relief.
In Vomiting, eating this chutney with candy sugar benefits.
Taking 1 tsp of roasted crushed coriander with water helps to stop loose motions.
CAUTION
Persons suffering from sexual weakness should not consume coriander.

Cilantro not only tastes good, but is good for you. The cilantro is the green part of the plant and the seeds that are picked from the plant are coriander. Cilantro is used in both Asian and South American foods.

There is a whole pharmacy in our spice cabinet. Not only are herbs tasty, they are an important part of good health. I had no idea coriander could do so much.
